“Like much of Michaelson’s work, the decor of her Beverly Hills residence is a study in confident contrasts that add a satisfying complexity to the mix: this is a home with umami depth. It has a sleek, almost monastic feel, thanks to imposing cement walls and floors, which have been layered with architectural salvage and antiques.”
“My philosophy is that if you love every object, it should hold its own,” observes Michaelson, “and the addition of it in the room should only add to the space’s overall aesthetic.”
“Design choices within the space are strongly influenced by two factors: density and detail. The furniture pieces as well as decorative accessories appear almost overwhelming from one angle but do not create a claustrophobic feeling, on the contrary, they also clearly amplify the cultural lifestyle of the owner.”
“Andrea Michaelson knows for sure that creating an interior is not just about balancing aesthetics, functionality and comfort. Each room in the house should reflect the character of its owner, the designer is sure, and therefore her California residence has become the embodiment of style and sensuality.”
“Inspired by the creative landscape and indoor/outdoor lifestyle in California, Michaelson believes in personalized attention for each client. Her philosophy? “Remaining true to my design aesthetic, and not selling out,” she says. “And, keeping my business small enough to manage the design myself.”
“I always make sure to incorporate details that will distinguish the design. I also always try to integrate a counterpoint, a beautiful, unexpected ‘aha!’ moment that brings a little soul to the space.”
“The raw detailing carries through the 1400-sq ft loft. “Every surface was gutted and replaced,” says Andrea. “It was so melamine, it had to go.” Andrea says with a laugh.
“Altogether, it’s a combination of rich elements,” Michaelson says. “I do feel a lot of good design is nourished in the past. Things that have souls appeal to me.”
